About us — the
Typoretum Story

Typoretum is a family-run letterpress design and printing studio, established in 2008 by Justin Knopp and his wife Cecilia. Born out of a genuine passion for the craft rather than simply a response to its revival, Typoretum has grown from a personal obsession into one of the UK’s most respected specialist studios — known for its exacting standards, creative ambition, and the warmth of the working relationships it builds along the way.

Justin’s fascination with letterpress began during his BA (Hons) Graphic Design studies at Central Saint Martins (1991–1994), where a chance encounter with the college’s composing room — a 1950s time capsule hidden deep in the building — ignited a lifelong interest in the process. Over the following years he amassed an extensive collection of lead and wooden types, antique and vintage printing presses, and the wider paraphernalia of a craft the industry had largely left behind.

Today, Typoretum offers a comprehensive range of services, from custom letterpress printing and hot foil stamping to specialist finishing techniques — always with an emphasis on pushing traditional processes further than convention might suggest. Much of our work is undertaken in close collaboration with designers, creative studios and art directors, many of whom have been working with us for years. We take genuine pride in those relationships, and in finding the best possible solution for every project that comes through our doors.

We also offer short courses and occasional internship opportunities, because passing the craft on matters to us as much as practising it.
